Autoimmune refers to a condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells, tissues, and organs, treating them as foreign invaders. It is a malfunction where the immune system fails to distinguish "self" from "non-self," causing inflammation and damage, often leading to chronic, uncurable diseases.

Key Aspects of Autoimmune Conditions:

  • Risk Factors: These conditions are slightly more common in women and can have genetic predispositions.

  • Management: While there is usually no cure, treatments focus on reducing symptoms and controlling the autoimmune response.

Targeted Damage: The immune system sends antibodies to attack healthy organs, joints, skin, or muscles.

  • Symptoms: Common signs include fatigue, fever, muscle aches, and joint pain, often occurring in cycles.

  • Prevalence:

There are over 80 known autoimmune diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes, and Lupus.

Common Examples:

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis: Immune system attacks the thyroid gland.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Immune system attacks the joints.

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Immune system attacks the pancreas.

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Immune system damages the nerves.

  • Psoriasis: Immune system affects skin cells.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) helps manage autoimmune conditions by reducing chronic inflammation, suppressing auto-reactive T-cells, and promoting tissue repair. By breathing concentrated oxygen in a pressurized chamber, patients often experience reduced fatigue, improved sleep, and faster recovery from flares.

Key Benefits & Applications for Autoimmunity

  • Inflammation Reduction: HBOT lowers pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppresses T-cell mediated autoimmune responses.

  • Conditions Treated: Research suggests benefits for multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and fibro-myalgia.

  • Healing & Fatigue: Effective at treating autoimmune-related skin ulcers and significantly reducing fatigue.

  • Immune Modulation: Helps promote immune tolerance rather than suppression, potentially stabilizing the disease, as shown in studies for Lupus (SLE).
