Stem cells are unspecialized "master cells" of the body that have the unique ability to divide and develop into many different, specialized cell types—such as muscle, blood, or brain cells. They function as a natural repair system, regenerating or replacing damaged tissue, and are vital for growth and maintaining healthy organs.

What Do Stem Cells Do?

  • Self-Renewal: They can divide and renew themselves over long periods, acting as a "template" to create new cells.

  • Differentiation: They can transform into specialized cells with specific functions, like repairing damaged heart muscle or regenerating blood cells.

  • Tissue Repair: Adult stem cells (found in bone marrow, fat, and skin) constantly repair tissues by replacing cells that die or are injured.

  • Healing Signals: Research suggests some stem cells act like a "biologic pharmacy," releasing proteins and signals that reduce inflammation and boost the body’s natural repair mechanisms.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) stimulates the body to produce and release stem cells, particularly CD34+ stem/progenitor cells, by creating a high-oxygen, high-pressure environment that triggers bone marrow mobilization. Studies show that a single session can increase circulating stem cells, and a course of treatments can cause a significant, multi-fold increase, aiding in tissue repair.

Key Findings on HBOT and Stem Cells:

  • Mobilization Mechanism: HBOT increases dissolved oxygen in the blood, signaling the bone marrow to release stem cells into circulation.

  • Stem Cell Increase: resting in a chamber at 1.4-1.5 ATA (atmospheres absolute) for two 1 hour sessions can almost double the number of circulating CD34+ stem cells in humans; 40 treatments can lead to almost a sevenfold increase.

  • Key Cell Marker (CD34+): Research indicates a significant rise in CD34+ blood markers after HBOT, which are associated with stem cell release.

  • Effectiveness: Studies show that Hyperbaric Oxygen Increases Stem Cell Proliferation and that Hyperbaric air mobilizes stem cells in humans, suggesting both oxygen and pressure contribute to stem cell proliferation.

  • Tissue Regeneration: The mobilized stem cells contribute to angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and tissue regeneration in damaged or ischemic tissues.

Benefits and Applications:

  • Enhanced Healing: HBOT-induced stem cell mobilization is particularly effective for healing chronic wounds, reducing inflammation, and treating injured tissues.

  • Improved Recovery: HBOT can be used to treat, among other conditions, strokes, cerebral palsy, and non-healing wounds.

  • Anti-aging Potential: Research suggests HBOT may help in reversing age-related conditions, Stem cell mobilization by hyperbaric oxygen, and improving cognitive function.

  • Combined Treatment: Combining HBOT with direct stem cell therapy can significantly improve the healing results.
